Scientist-E & Group Head (Aerospace Laboratory)
Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI)
Tom Thampy is Scientist-E and Group Head at the Aerospace
Laboratory, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Bangalore. He
holds a Master’s degree from IIT Tirupati and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering
from Anna University. With over 18 years of experience in aerospace hydraulics,
he specializes in the design, development, and qualification testing of
hydraulic Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), as well as advanced test rigs and
custom test setups for aerospace applications. He has been instrumental in
establishing core capabilities at CMTI in linear and rotary actuation systems,
as well as axial piston pump technology. His notable contributions include the
development of high-frequency electro-hydraulic pneumatic separators, advanced
pressure impulse and endurance test rigs, electrohydraulic force exciters for
structural modal testing, and a high-pressure fuel-heating system capable of
heating Jet-A1 fuel to 270 °C and delivering it at 180 bar for actuator
qualification. He has authored over ten technical papers, holds two patents, and
has received several prestigious recognitions, including the IEI Young
Engineers Award (2019–2020) and the Innovation Award at MEDIC 2018 (IIT
Bombay).
